Our Story

Sarah’s journey into costume design began at the age of 13 during her work experience at a local theatre. Whilst still at school she learnt to stitch in a bridal dressmakers at the weekends, eventually going on to study BA Costume for the Screen & Stage at the Arts Institute Bournemouth.

In 2009 she founded Sarah Juliet Costumes in her hometown of Brighton, where she cut her teeth in Fringe theatre, Drag, walkabout & cirque performance. Having worked across the city — the corner of a print studio, a North Laine basement & above a pub — she moved to her studio in Brixton, South London in 2016, where she & a small dedicated team design & create costumes for theatre, film, television & live events. Regular clients include several West End Theatres, Shakespeare’s Globe & Marvel Studios. She is passionate about the arts & believes that storytelling through performance has transformative potential for both individuals & societies. She enjoys working across the industry & regularly collaborates with individual artists, colleges, charities & community groups.

With skills ranging from pattern cutting to prop costume construction Sarah & her team specialise in ambitious collaborative designs with an emphasis on colour & detailed textiles work, as well as challenging construction.

Enquiries are welcomed for design &/or construction & initial consultations are always fun, free & encouraged.

“I have worked with Sarah and her team on several projects. She is great to work with and a really good collaberator. She understands the designs well and gives good input and suggestions on materials and researches fabrics/feathers/braids etc that help to bring the designs to life. She communicates really well and her problem solving on tricky designs is a real asset. She always works to agreed deadlines and has made herself avaliable once costumes are delivered to make sure everything works well for the needs of the production. She is great in fittings with helpful input and really approachable about any tweeks that need to be made. Her ability to take tricky prop costumes and bring them to life is wonderful. The items she has made for me have always been great and she goes above and beyond to make the costumes special.” Lisa Aitken – Costume Supervisor Oliver Twist, Regents Park Open Air Theatre & Shipwreck, Almedia Theatre
